Engineering Ourselves – The Future Potential Power of 3D-Bioprinting?

Researchers at Swansea University are exploring the use of a novel 3D-bioprinting technology to make living tissue structures. This research is being focused not towards fuelling the excitement of organogenesis, but instead towards producing heterogeneous biological support tissues for use in reconstructive surgery.  Continue reading “Engineering Ourselves – The Future Potential Power of 3D-Bioprinting?”

3D printing to produce made-to-measure insoles

Using the system being developed by FDM Digital Solutions, hospitals will be able to scan a patient’s foot shape and email it to the company, which will then print and deliver insoles to the exact specification within as little as 48 hours. The process will replace the traditional hand-made techniques and could revolutionise the way the NHS buys orthotics and other products. “How Do I Reach These Kids?” Build a 3D Bioprinter

After nine months of perseverance, high school seniors at Loveland High School in Ohio successfully created a 3D bioprinter. The payoff came as part of the capstone project for three students: Nathan Bryant, Cameron Spicer and Thomas Worsham. Their biotechnology teacher, Jamie Allison had a warranted emotional reaction when the project finally came to fruition. Even the superintendent commented on the revelation. The ability to print bacteria is now accomplished at the high school level. Continue reading ““How Do I Reach These Kids?” Build a 3D Bioprinter”

Surgeons use 3D printed parts to rebuild Stephen Powers’s face after accident

A British man who suffered horrific facial injuries in a motorbike accident has had pioneering surgery to rebuild his face using 3D printed parts. Stephen Power from Cardiff, Wales is thought to be one of the first trauma patients in the world to have a procedure in which 3D printing was used at every stage.
