Nanofiber technologies for improving the biological compatibility of metal implants

In the current project we deal with surface modification of implants for large joints, which are prepared by traditional and additive technologies. Czech private company Prospon s.r.o., material scientists from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and we from private company Contipro a.s. as specialists in surface treatment of 3D surfaces with the help of an electrostatic field are involved in the project.

In my presentation I would like to draw attention to the importance of surface treatment of 3D implants intended for pharmacy. A surface layer of a metal implant affects its acceptance by the human body. The surface treatment enhances metal implant properties e.g. its biocompatibility, enhance a cell adhesion and proliferation, reduce inflammatory responses, and facilitate integration between the implant and surrounding tissues.

In addition, the layer may contain antibacterial active substances which help to reduce the immune response, the risk of infection and the overall rejection of the implant by the body.

Herein electro spun nanofibrous surface layers made from a collagen-hydroxyapatite dispersion was used to improve 3D implants made by SLS or traditional technologies. The overall technological procedure will be the main content of the presentation.

Since the early stages of material composition research, we have been able to appropriately adjust the spinning process to achieve uniformity and quality of the surface layer, perform repeated geometric and mechanical measurements, and evaluate the results of preclinical tests. From the results achieved, the use of such coatings is very promising for practical use in orthopedic surgeries.
