Nanofiber technologies for improving the biological compatibility of metal implants

by Marek Pokorny, Contipro a.s.

In the current project we deal with surface modification of implants for large joints, which are prepared by traditional and additive technologies. Czech private company Prospon s.r.o., material scientists from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and we from private company Contipro a.s. as specialists in surface treatment of 3D surfaces with the help of an electrostatic field are involved in the project.

In my presentation I would like to draw attention to the importance of surface treatment of 3D implants intended for pharmacy. A surface layer of a metal implant affects its acceptance by the human body. The surface treatment enhances metal implant properties e.g. its biocompatibility, enhance a cell adhesion and proliferation, reduce inflammatory responses, and facilitate integration between the implant and surrounding tissues.

In addition, the layer may contain antibacterial active substances which help to reduce the immune response, the risk of infection and the overall rejection of the implant by the body.

Herein electro spun nanofibrous surface layers made from a collagen-hydroxyapatite dispersion was used to improve 3D implants made by SLS or traditional technologies. The overall technological procedure will be the main content of the presentation.

Since the early stages of material composition research, we have been able to appropriately adjust the spinning process to achieve uniformity and quality of the surface layer, perform repeated geometric and mechanical measurements, and evaluate the results of preclinical tests. From the results achieved, the use of such coatings is very promising for practical use in orthopedic surgeries.

What drives you?
To see people using the devices I designed.

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?
Because we should all be interested in reducing the risk of the human body rejecting an implant made with AM.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?
Additive bio-manufacturing, precise robotics, big data healthcare.

What kind of impact do you expect them to have?
Patient-specific treatment that is gentle to the human body.

What are the barriers that might stand in the way?
Comprehensiveness of the human body.

About Marek Pokorny

As a researcher with more than 10+ years of experience in R&D at Contipro, I oversee a team of six to ten researchers. My team and I are engaged in research and development of laboratory equipment for preparation of various forms based on hyaluronic acid and other biopolymers. Our most exciting work to date was creating the 4SPIN® brand devices for laboratory and industrial nanofibrous layers production. Thanks to these technologies we can offer nanofiber layers for cosmetic and medical applications.

About Contipro a.s.

Contipro is well known producer of hyaluronic acid for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Our company is constantly growing, while we focus on new and innovative biotechnology fields. We are of the few world leaders in sodium hyaluronate chemistry. We are also a manufacturer of final pharmaceutical products based on various polysaccharides, especially hyaluronan in original and modified forms. Most of the company´s scientific activities are focused on using hyaluronan in tissue engineering, wound healing, nanotechnology and drug delivery.
