About Nils Broeckx
Nils Broeckx studied law at the UAntwerpen (University of Antwerp) (2010 magna cum laude). In 2016 he obtained a doctoral degree at the UAntwerpen with a thesis headed “Orgaantransplantatie. Een juridische analyse”(Organ transplantation. A legal analysis) at the same university. This doctoral thesis was awarded the biennial Scientific Prize for Health Law André Prims.

Since 2016 Nils has joined Dewallens & partners law firm. Nils has a broad interest in health law and has expertise in the legal framework of bodily material and medical devices, in data protection and in medical liability.

Drug delivery systems with sophisticated architectures can be created with 3D printing technology. Triastek, Inc. designed and built the fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers with multiple printer heads to create the complex pharmaceutical dosage forms. The unique architecture of tablet dosage form is created with one or more compartments. These compartments serve different functions, such as, reservoir and density modulation. The 3D printed tablets can modulate the release of active ingredients at a predetermined time, mode, and rate to achieve desired therapeutic outcomes. Mixing and/or matching the release characteristics provide a unique solution to various unmet clinical needs and therapeutic regimens. Since the introduction of the first dental CBCT in the nineties, the market has been exponentially growing. Indications are wide and not solely limited to the diagnostic aspects of CBCT. Indeed, the inherent 3D datasets may further allow surgical planning and transfer to surgery via 3Dprinting or navigation. Integrated digital patient information may allow virtual treatment planning treatment in 3 or even 4 dimensions. This currently finds applications in orthodontics, periodontal and maxillofacial surgery, tooth autotransplantation and implant placement. This may revolutionize any surgery and implies the printing of viable tissues, allowing to open up an entirely new era. Next generation hydrogels for 3D tissue engineering: From simple bioinks to complex ECM mimics – Presented by Matthew Baker, MERLN Institute

The use of hydrogels as a 3D environment for tissue engineering and as a soft biomaterial scaffold remains one of the most promising and successful material classes, with a long history of development. However, our tool-box for materials remains surprisingly limited, especially when considering the need for customizability. Our lab attacks this problem from two fronts: 1) We use simple, straightforward, and reliable chemical functionalization to create user-friendly “bioinks” for 3D printing of soft tissue constructs, and 2) We create bioinspired hydrogels, based on supramolecular self-assembly, that more closely recapitulate the dynamic nature, structure, and function of the native extracellular matrix (ECM). We ultimately aim to create straightforward and reliable hydrogels, which are robust enough to allow for biofabrication, while being dynamic enough to recapitulate the native cellular environment.
