Drug delivery systems with sophisticated architectures can be created with 3D printing technology. Triastek, Inc. designed and built the fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers with multiple printer heads to create the complex pharmaceutical dosage forms. The unique architecture of tablet dosage form is created with one or more compartments. These compartments serve different functions, such as, reservoir and density modulation. The 3D printed tablets can modulate the release of active ingredients at a predetermined time, mode, and rate to achieve desired therapeutic outcomes. Mixing and/or matching the release characteristics provide a unique solution to various unmet clinical needs and therapeutic regimens.
