Digital Drug Manufacturing – towards truly personalized drug delivery

One of the challenges of the pharma industry is the need for faster development and production of drug dosage forms for ever smaller target groups. TNO has built up a solid position and reputation in the field of 3D printing for the food industry.

Making use of this know-how base TNO is now together with partners, initiating innovations, in the pharma value chain, to unlock the potential of 3D Pharma printing as an enabling technology for cost effective small scale drug product manufacturing, dose personalization, multi-drug combinations and tailored release profiles.

Creation of oral dosage forms using powder bed printing – Presented by Kjeld van Bommel, TNO, at the 3D Medical Conference, which takes place on January 30-31, 2019, at MECC Maastricht, The Netherlands.

TNO has been active in the area of 3D printing for over 20 years. Although initially working with more traditional 3D printing materials over the past 8 years TNO has expanded to other materials and thus areas of application for 3D printing. Among these are the areas of food and pharma, which have similarities in the materials they employ, the product properties that are desired and the challenges this brings for 3D printing. In this presentation some of the latest results of the 3D pharma printing work carried out at TNO will be presented. Riley works at AMSystems as an innovation program manager looking into new applications in the medical and pharmaceutical markets. He develops industrial, end-use 3D printing applications using a factory-of-the-future system, that includes 3D printing, inspection, finishing, and part removal.
