Drug delivery systems with sophisticated architectures can be created with 3D printing technology. Triastek, Inc. designed and built the fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers with multiple printer heads to create the complex pharmaceutical dosage forms. The unique architecture of tablet dosage form is created with one or more compartments. These compartments serve different functions, such as, reservoir and density modulation. The 3D printed tablets can modulate the release of active ingredients at a predetermined time, mode, and rate to achieve desired therapeutic outcomes. Mixing and/or matching the release characteristics provide a unique solution to various unmet clinical needs and therapeutic regimens. Triastek has developed the fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printer with multiple printer heads for creating the complex pharmaceutcial dosage forms. The unique architecture of tablet is created with one or more compartment(s) or chamber(s) within a tablet. These compartments can hold drug(s) in a specailly designed formulation to modulate the release of active ingredient(s) at a predetermined time and rate in a given mode. Onset time, mode of drug release, and release rate could affect the efficacy and outcome of drug therapy. Therefore, rational use of these characteristics of drug release can achieve desired or synergistic pharmacological effect in clinical application of one or more drug(s). Mixing and/or matching these characteristics of drug release to meet the clinical needs for various therapeutic regimens can be achieved by creating one single tablet using 3D printing technology.
